Politics as Usual?

So this election season has proven to be everything, including ordinary. I'm not surprised by the level of vitriol both Democrats' sides have spouted. Nor am I surprised that the media is totally into making mountains out of molehills ("she cried!" "His middle name is HUSSEIN!"), lowering the level of political discourse in the country by focusing on non-issues (the latest news is that Obama is distantly related to Brad Pitt and Hillary is the ninth cousin twice removed from Angelina Jolie. No joke) and preemptively crowning the next President of the United States. Mr. America himself, the Golden Child, Barack Obama. Fine. Whatev'.

What does surprise me is how even in the best and most opportune of times to win an election, the Democratic PARTY is once again showing that it sucks at mobilizing and unifying candidates. I really believe that we need a Democrat in office come January 2009. In previous elections, to some extent, I was voting independently of the party, focusing solely on the candidate and where he stood on the issues. This time around, the ideology itself is what I feel is best for our country, no matter who the face is on the ticket. The party and the candidates, however, seem to find that the moment is ripe to have an all-out, box 'til the death, oh-no-you-didn't slap fest. While they slap away, I fear the election will be slipping away.

My support will always be behind Senator Clinton. There are just too many reasons why for me to list here. But I think its time she set her candidacy aside and allow someone less divisive to represent. I just hope that come November, the "loyalists" will not be stopping in their tracks to reconsider Senator Obama and [regretfully] vote for the status quo. That will be a sad, sad day indeed.
