Overheard in illy

I cannot fall asleep without some kind of noise (usually classical music) lulling me into a stupor. This has become the case with studying. So I decided to head over to B&N in Rittenhouse Square for a change of scenery, some java and an atmosphere of bustling conversation.

Its incredible how free and candid people are when chatting with each other or on the phone in public places. This one woman sitting behind me was having a talk with her therapist on her cell. I kid you not, she was asking in a loud and clear voice...

"Do you think these suicidal thoughts are normal? I mean do you think I'm showing symptoms of depression? What? You do? Hold on."

And off she went. Only to be replaced by two people, who began engaging in an interview. The woman appeared to be a journalist and her interviewee was a very, VERY proud Gay Asian-American. In the middle of overhearing their conversation and trying to learn about how creditors are remedied when debtors default, some random British dude (or chap, ha!) walked over to me and asked whether he could sit at my table. Of course, he had to ask me while I was sipping coffee, which I almost spilled out of my mouth in an attempt to answer him. So I nodded yes. He must have thought I was mute.

Do you ever feel invasive when listening in on others' conversations? Especially when the conversations feature some controversial or taboo subjects, particularly about the individuals' themselves? I do. No matter how hard I pretend to not listen (typing away, checking my cell for "missed calls"), my ears inadvertently catch more than I should hear.

Maybe I should just stick to the library.
